More than enough!

“I will give you what you have not asked for. “ (1 Kings 3:12,13).

Christian marathon runners sometimes wear the logo ‘3.16’ on their T-shirts. This is a reference to the most famous verse in the Bible. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16). This verse is a powerful reminder that God is a giving God.

Generosity is an essential aspect of his nature. God loves to lavish gifts upon his children, including those things for which we have not asked. Sometimes, because he knows the bigger picture, God answers our prayers by saying ‘Wait a while’. Sometimes he answers with a regretful ‘No’. This was his answer to perhaps the most famous of all prayers. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed, ‘Father, take this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done’. The answer to Jesus’ prayer – for our sake - was ‘No’.

But above all, God loves to answer our prayers with a resounding ‘Yes’ and that was what he did for Solomon. God was delighted to add extra gifts to those requested by Solomon. In addition to wisdom he would lavish wealth and honour upon him. I am reminded of Jesus’ promise in the Sermon on the Mount. If we seek God’s Kingdom first, all the other necessary and practical stuff- like food and clothing - will be ours as well (Matthew 6:33).

More than enough!
